What’s behind
the work we do?

We started this hospice to ensure no one in our Ipswich community faces the end of their life alone, because we know how overwhelming it can be to navigate illness, loss and grief. Now, we offer personalised palliative care and bereavement support through Ipswich Hospice and Hilda’s House, so families can experience dignity, comfort and care beyond the hospital system.

Our History & Future

Ipswich Hospice began as a community vision in 1985, created by local leaders and volunteers who recognised the need for compassionate end of life care and support close to home. What started as home based care grew into a dedicated hospice, built by the community, for the community, providing palliative care and bereavement support to families across the region. Today, Ipswich Hospice continues to honour that legacy through a home like environment where people feel safe, supported and connected during some of lifes most difficult moments. With a strong foundation in compassion, dignity and community partnership, they have supported thousands of individuals and families through end of life and grief. Looking ahead, Ipswich Hospice is committed to strengthening access to personalised care, expanding community awareness and ensuring their services remain responsive for the next generation, so no one faces death or loss alone.

The Story of Hilda’s House

Hildas House was created to ensure that grief and bereavement support remains a core part of the hospice mission. Located in Eastern Heights, it provides a dedicated space where individuals and families can receive counselling, support programs and guidance after the loss of a loved one. Named in honour of the compassionate community spirit that helped build Ipswich Hospice, Hildas House continues that legacy by supporting people through the journey of grief. Through counselling, group programs and community connection, it helps individuals and families find support, understanding and hope during difficult times. Together, Ipswich Hospice and Hildas House reflect the same belief that compassionate care should not end at death, but continue to support families as they navigate loss and healing.

Our dear friend passed away at Ipswich Hospice Care recently and she always expressed how blessed she felt to be cared for there. Although some things in the building need updating or prettying up, the care given by staff and volunteers is wonderful. We loved being able to visit at any time and see our friend so appreciative of all that was being done for her. If you're looking for somewhere to kindly donate, please consider Ipswich Hospice, they need extra rooms so more people can have a more homely environment to see out their last weeks/months. Instead of hospital walls/curtains, patients look out their own large windows to gardens/trees/park and hear a vast array of birds singing. They can open up their doors/windows to fresh air or control their own air conditioner for their own comfort. Each room has it's own bathroom for privacy and convenience. Fresh food is prepared and cooked for each meal and patients can even have visits from their beloved pets. Thank you Ipswich Hospice!
